About Color Lines

Color Lines is a turn-based gem puzzle played on a 14-column by 10-row board. Select one colored gem, then move it to an empty cell that it can reach through open spaces. Line up at least five gems of the same color in a straight line—horizontal, vertical, or diagonal—to clear them and add to your score.

A move that does not clear a line is followed by three new gems appearing on the board. Plan around the changing gaps, keep routes open for future moves, and make room before the grid fills. The run ends when there is no space left for another gem; the game tracks your current, last, and saved high scores, along with elapsed time.

How to play Color Lines

  1. Press Play to start a round and view the gem board.
  2. Tap or click a gem to select it, then tap or click an empty destination cell. The gem moves only if a clear route through the board is available.
  3. Arrange five or more gems of the same color in one straight line to remove that line and earn points.
  4. If a move does not make a matching line, three random gems are added to empty cells. Check the new board before choosing your next move.
  5. Keep playing while there are open cells. When the board is full, the round ends; compare your score with the saved record and start again.

Color Lines strategy tips

  1. Build toward a line before you move

Look for colors that already have several gems close together. Move a gem to complete a line of five rather than scattering matching colors across the board.

  2. Preserve open routes

A gem cannot pass through occupied cells. Avoid blocking the narrow gaps between groups, and choose destinations that keep more than one route available for later turns.

  3. Make each no-clear turn count

When you cannot complete a line, move a gem into a position that helps set up the next one. Three new gems arrive after a move without a clear, so leave enough empty cells to absorb them.

  4. Clear crowded areas early

A cluster of new gems can cut off routes and fill the grid quickly. Prioritize a ready match or a move that opens space instead of chasing a color on the far side of the board.

  5. Scan the whole board each turn

Check rows, columns, and both diagonal directions for a five-gem match, then look again after new gems appear. A useful line may form away from the area you were just playing.

Color Lines FAQ

Is Color Lines free to play?

Yes. Play it in your browser without downloading the game or creating an account.

How do I move a gem in Color Lines?

Tap or click a gem to select it, then choose an empty destination cell. It can move only when there is an open route through the board.

How many gems do I need to clear?

Make a straight line of at least five gems in the same color. Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines count; matched gems clear and add to your score.

Do diagonal matches count in Color Lines?

Yes. Five or more gems of one color can be cleared in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line.

What happens when I do not make a line?

Three new gems appear on empty cells after a move that does not clear a match.

Can gems move through other gems?

No. A move needs an open route through unoccupied cells, so other gems can block the path to a destination.

What ends a round?

The round ends when the board has no empty cells left for new gems. Keep making clears to preserve space.

Is there a time limit?

The game displays elapsed time, but the round-ending condition is a full board rather than a countdown reaching zero.

Does Color Lines save my best score?

Yes. The game stores your last score and high score in browser storage on the device you play on.

Can I play Color Lines on a phone?

Yes. Tap a gem and then a destination cell. The game canvas is 16:9, so rotating your phone to landscape gives the board more room.
